Anniversaries are always good events on which to hang narratives, and they don’t come much bigger than the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. Randall Poster, a music supervisor who has worked with directors such as Wes Anderson and Martin Scorsese, decided to mark the occasion with a compilation of songs from the republican North, the confederate South and all points in between. His efforts have been supported by an incredible galaxy of stars from country, bluegrass and folk – names that range from Loretta Lynn and Ralph Stanley to Steve Earle and Chris Hillman, Chris Thile and Carolina Chocolate Drops. These sublime artists interpret songs and tunes associated with the era – songs as well worn as Wildwood Flower and Pretty Saro mixed with less familiar titles the likes of Tenting On The Old Campground and Two Soldiers. The latter is a particular highlight, Ricky Scaggs performing it with quiet but burning passion. Even old chestnuts such as Marching Through Georgia and Down By The Riverside are given new leases of life by Old Crow Medicine Show and Taj Mahal respectively.
